Another footy season comes to an end in Australia with the AFL & NRL Grand Finals this weekend. Each year we check in with Facebook and Twitter to see how the teams stack up.
Some stats that jumped out at us:
NRL fans still like Facebook more than AFL fans, 3.9M (up from 2.3M) fans vs 3.1M (up from 2.0M) fans with two less teams
Twitter's low club numbers continue to be a concern them at 28% of Facebook fans base in AFL and 18% in NRL
12 teams have less than 200K fans across Facebook and Twitter, last year only 10 teams passed that mark (now that's 22 clubs for those poor at maths)
Brisbane Broncos remain alone in the 500,000 club but three NRL clubs are edging close to that mark (Rabbitohs, Warriors & Storm)
A total of 8.8M fans (up from 4.5M last year) fans like NRL & AFL teams this is not a unique fans number though
Please look back at previous analysis of AFL and NRL social media numbers in 2014, 2013 comparing leagues around the world and 2011 (battle for social media fans back in March 2011) and (September 2011) as well as SSMI in 2010 in AFL.
