10:19:50 From Mitch Siwek : Morning/evening everyone! Mitch Siwek – recent uni grad – Melbourne – https://www.linkedin.com/in/mitch-siwek-284781121/
10:23:58 From Paul Bains : Interesting that Kraken haven’t taken Seattle traditional colours and naming
10:24:20 From Hannah Bee : Whats the process of ‘converting' a fan from one form of the sport to another? Eg. Dom your experience on T20 as it arrived as the new format of cricket, or even Esports versions of ‘traditional' sports that have been so prevalent in COVID times?
10:24:30 From Paul Bains : Seattle and LA are very different sports markets. From the other side of the work LA looks like a harder market to break
10:26:45 From Craig Green : SprtsHQ : Absolutely Paul. Sometimes starting from scratch is easier because there is no brand equity [good or bad] to deal with. I launched the WS Wanderers A-League FC from scratch and I think it was easier because we built our own journey.
10:28:22 From Paul Bains : Interring from Laura about expectation to turn up. What I’ve seen from teams over here in NZ is that the weekly newsletter email doesn’t change between season ticket holders and the more “casual” fan
10:29:45 From Paul Bains : I think the acceptance of non-attending fans will be more. Man United for example takes a lot of flack that most of it’s supporters have never been to Manchester for example
10:32:07 From Craig Green : SprtsHQ : Man U is a great example Paul. I did some work with their marketing head when they toured in 2012/2013 Australia and their approach to fans was diverse, global and mostly non attendance related.
10:33:22 From David Hopkins to Sean Callanan (Privately) : Homeschooling gone bad outside of my office door. Apologies for leaving early.
10:33:47 From colinkelly : Only 3 percent of NFL fans have actually attended an NFL game in person
10:35:07 From Hannah Bee : Sorry to target you Dom – I instantly wanted to pick your brain from your intro!
10:35:16 From Jim Dorash : When working in the AFL we set up supporter groups in regional Victoria as well as each state capital. We identified a key connections in each area and then supported them to grow their individual membership. To help them get started as well as holding events with players and merchandise. This led to increase in membership and game day sales in each area.
10:35:30 From Darren Anderson : Good example of lowering barriers to engage with sport through education @Dom
10:37:25 From Hannah Bee : Big bash are the best at the rule explainers, honestly many footy codes could take learning from the BBL in-match experience
10:39:39 From Hannah Bee : Does it point to more than fans follow TEAMS over SPORTS?
10:40:16 From Paul Bains : Discussing NFL vis NBA and NBA is more athlete supported and NFL more team supported so it depends on the sport
10:43:03 From Mitch Siwek : As an Australian example, a lot of people complain about the quality of the A-League and don't want to pay to watch it live, but as football fans will still watch the EPL, Champions League and the like. So in some cases, is it a matter of building/developing a better on field product which may take some time?
10:43:15 From Akhil Bhaskar : The MLS grabbed huge global attention when David Beckham signed for LA Galaxy and hasn't attracting global stars to teams have been beneficial to the league too, just curious to know what was the effect
10:44:54 From Suzy George : The merge between real world & e-sports is something we discussed in our breakout room. A really interesting way of attracting new fans and engaging existing fans in new ways
10:45:17 From colinkelly : RE MLS: To me, bringing in global stars at the end of their careers is a bit of a band-aid. It’s good for a season or two and jersey sales but doesn’t build long-term affinity.
10:45:33 From Aaron LeValley : Akhil – it was definitely a tremendous benefits for the Galaxy and MLS in general. The hardest part with international signings, as Colin indiciated, is finding ways to get them supportive of the brand/team, as well as the player. Many fans now a days are supportive of the player rather than the team, and follow the player as they move
10:45:43 From Paul Bains : Are the real life professional drives still e-racing with the return to real life racing?
10:45:56 From Hannah Bee : Has anyone got any tangible stats on how many fans carried back into the real-life versions? I've been chasing that answer for ages!
10:46:28 From Akhil Bhaskar : Aaron –
10:46:57 From Akhil Bhaskar : That was a good point – when fan following is driven by player affinity more than team/brand
10:48:53 From Matt Vinson : @Paul – Not currently as the drivers focus is now back to the on-track sport, but for the off-season, I see it continuing.
10:49:39 From Hannah Bee : Paul – In Supercars land there's a real split of drivers who've continued using iracing for training or fun and those who only did as they were required to for the eseries (participation was mandatory for them)
10:49:56 From Akhil Bhaskar : @collin yeah priorities at the end of player career shifts.
10:50:32 From Paul Bains : Thanks Matt, in someways that tells fans it was just a filler rather than a serious competition. So should fans take it seriously.
10:51:00 From Paul Bains : Interesting that some Supercars drivers are still continuing
10:51:37 From Matt Vinson : @Paul – For sure, And for that particular execution, it was marketed as a filler. The drivers had fun with it. With our week to week esports compeitions, the competitors in that space compete virtually full time. We market those series very differently.
10:51:45 From Hannah Bee : Those who are continuing are mostly those who had done a bit of it prior to COVID to be fair.
10:52:23 From Hannah Bee : Supercars had an interesting strategy of trying to present it as close to real life as the real product. I'm still not convinced that it was the best approach..
10:53:47 From Paul Bains : Sorry a little angry that we want to cover the women’s league but can’t
10:54:03 From Hannah Bee : Yeah that's ridiculous – tree falls in the forest analogy and all that!
10:55:47 From Akhil Bhaskar : @paul – the numbers from premier league showed that number of goals per match, shoots per match and forward movement reduced when the game happened behind closed doors
10:55:54 From Hannah Bee : @Adam, where could we pick up a copy of that one?
10:56:16 From Paul Bains : Great topic, thinking of cycling and the doping issues it had/has
10:57:27 From Adam Karg : Hannah – https://www.bookdepository.com/Loving-Sports-When-They-Dont-Love-You-Back-Jessica-Luther/9781477313138?ref=grid-view&qid=1599008234690&sr=1-1
10:57:33 From Hannah Bee : Brilliant thank you!
10:57:39 From Aaron LeValley : thanks Sean
